How do I choose the right GRESSEL clamping jaw for the workpiece?

Choosing the right GRESSEL clamping jaw for the workpiece is crucial to the efficiency and quality of the machining processes. Here are some general guidelines to help you select the right GRESSEL clamping jaw for your workpiece:

  1. **Workpiece material:** Take the workpiece material into account. Different materials require different clamping jaws to ensure optimal clamping without damaging the workpiece. We offer clamping jaws specifically designed for soft materials such as aluminum or harder materials such as steel.
  1. **Workpiece Shape and Size:** The shape and size of the workpiece play a key role in selecting the right clamping jaw. We offer a wide range of clamping jaws for various workpiece shapes and sizes. For irregularly shaped workpieces, you may need clamping jaws with soft inserts or modular clamping systems that allow for flexible adjustment.
  1. **Clamping Force:** Take into account the forces that occur during the machining process. For heavy-duty machining involving high forces, you need robust clamping jaws that provide high clamping force without deforming the workpiece.
  1. **Precision Requirements:** The required machining precision is also critical. For high-precision applications, clamping jaws are needed that ensure accurate positioning and repeatability.
  1. **Compatibility with your clamping device:** Make sure the clamping jaws are compatible with your existing clamping device or machine. This includes not only the physical fit, but also the clamping force and the type of mounting.
  1. **Accessibility and Machining Area:** Consider how the clamping jaws hold the workpiece and how much access they provide for the machining tools. Ideally, the clamping jaws should hold the workpiece securely while allowing for maximum machining access.
  1. **Consulting and Support:** Take advantage of GRESSEL’s consulting services. Our experts can help you find the best solution for your specific needs, especially for complex or unusual applications.
  1. **Documentation and Technical Specifications:** Review the technical specifications and documentation for the clamping jaws to ensure they meet your requirements. Pay close attention to details regarding clamping force, material, dimensions, and recommended applications.

By taking these factors into account, you can select the right GRESSEL clamping jaw for your workpiece and thus optimize the productivity and quality of your machining processes.

What are the principles of clamping?
  • No slipping of the workpiece
  • No deformation of the workpiece
  • Precisely controlled tension
  • Low costs
  • Little physical effort

Safety, dimensional accuracy and cleanliness depend on correct clamping

What are the criteria for choosing a clamping method?
  • workpiece
  • Material
  • Shape, dimensions, weight
  • Surface
  • Processing
  • Accuracy, tolerances
  • Batch size, batches
How do you determine the clamping force?

Factors that influence

  • Processing method
  • Shear forces
  • Direction of the shear forces
  • Orientation, position of the workpiece

The limits of emotional tension

  • Risk of deformation due to excessive tension
  • High costs for fixtures and clamping devices

Calculation for longitudinal machining with cutting forces

Fmax = 1.4 (milling) * 3 (safety factor) * FH (main cutting force)

What clamping systems do modern manufacturing plants use for unmanned shifts?

Precise, repeatable and automatable clamping systems are essential for unmanned production. Modern manufacturing plants therefore rely on automation.

With GRESSEL’s R-C2 automation system, you lay the foundations for cost-effective 24/7 production. The system enables the automated loading and unloading of clamping vises, reduces downtime and ensures reliable repeatability – even during long unmanned shifts.

You can find more information about the GRESSEL R-C2 here: https://www.gressel.ch/werkstueck-automation-r-c2/

What is the best clamping system for frequent tool changes?

Zero-point clamping systems are particularly well suited to frequent tool changes, offering short changeover times, high repeatability and maximum flexibility.

GRESSEL’s mechanical zero-point clamping systems offer the ideal solution. With gre4doc and gredoc, clamping devices can be changed in a matter of seconds without having to realign them each time. This reduces machine downtime and significantly boosts productivity.

How do clamping systems improve process reliability and throughput in machining?

Modern clamping systems play a key role in ensuring process reliability and productivity in machining. Precise and stable workpiece clamping prevents vibrations, workpiece movement and scrap, thereby improving machining quality and reducing the need for rework.

At the same time, well-designed clamping solutions enable higher cutting rates, shorter machining times and improved tool life. Rapid set-up procedures, for example using zero-point clamping systems, also minimise non-productive time and increase machine uptime.

What are the leading clamping systems for robust mass production in machining?

For robust mass production, the focus is primarily on clamping systems that enable high workpiece density and maximise machine uptime. Multi-clamping solutions such as double clamps, multi-clamps, pyramids and clamping towers have proven particularly effective in this regard.

  • D2 double clamping vise – enables two workpieces to be clamped simultaneously. Whilst a single component is being machined, the D2 allows two workpieces to be produced per machine cycle. This reduces non-productive time and significantly increases productivity.
  • M1 Multi-clamp – ideal for the cost-effective machining of small to medium-sized workpieces. Multiple components can be clamped and machined in a single operation. This reduces set-up time and unit costs.
  • Pyramids – make optimum use of the machine’s available working space. Thanks to multi-sided loading, numerous workpieces can be positioned on a single clamping fixture. This significantly increases the parts output per machine cycle.
  • Tombstones – offer maximum workpiece density. They enable the machining of numerous components in a single machine cycle and are ideal for series production and unmanned shifts.
Which clamping systems are best suited for five-axis machining centres?

There is certainly an ideal clamping vise for five-axis machining – though this always depends on the workpiece, the machining task and the production objective.

GRESSEL offers the right solution for a range of requirements:

  • C5X – the cost-effective solution for centric workpiece clamping with excellent accessibility.
  • SC5X – for the most demanding precision requirements and maximum repeatability.
  • C2.0 – the tried-and-tested all-rounder for a wide range of 5-axis applications.
  • C3 – ideal for the precise machining of small workpieces.
  • grepos-5X – for fast clamping with force-assisted clamping and high process reliability.
Which clamping systems are suitable for flexible small-batch CNC production?

The M1 multi-clamping vise is a particularly versatile solution for flexible CNC small-batch production. Thanks to its modular design, it can be quickly adapted to different workpieces and production requirements.

Whether large or small components, round or prismatic workpieces, single or multiple clamping – the M1 combines a wide variety of clamping tasks in a single system. This reduces set-up times, increases machine uptime and ensures that production remains cost-effective even with frequently changing orders.
